Calendar for October 31st
Saint Peter of Cetinje
He was born in Njeguši in 1749 and became a monk at the age of 12. Following the passing of Metropolitan Arsenije (Plamenac) in 1782, he became the Metropolitan and ruler of Montenegro. He spent his life "with a sword in one hand and a cross in the other," fighting to preserve the freedom of the Montenegrin people—whom he governed—and to strengthen the Orthodox faith among them. At the same time, he reconciled feuding Montenegrin tribes and waged war against the Turks and the French. He is considered the founder of Montenegrin statehood. Although he served as both the spiritual and secular leader of his people, he lived in a cramped, cold monastic cell, pleasing God through his ascetic labors. He passed away in 1830. His wonder-working relics rest in the Cetinje Monastery, where he also spent his earthly life.

Saint Luke the Apostle and Evangelist.
Saint Luke, a native of Antioch in Syria, was one of the 70 Apostles of Jesus Christ and a companion of the Holy Apostle Paul (2 Timothy 4:10). He came from an educated Greek background. From a young age, Luke dedicated himself to learning. Having studied Jewish law, he also learned the art of healing and became acquainted with Greek philosophy; he possessed a perfect command of both the Greek and Egyptian languages. Upon hearing of Christ, Saint Luke traveled to Palestine, where he began to follow the Savior continuously. Later, as one of the Seventy Disciples, he was sent forth by the Lord to proclaim the Kingdom of Heaven (Luke 10:1–3). Saint Luke was also among the first disciples to whom the Risen Christ appeared—this occurred while Luke and another disciple, Cleopas, were on their way to Emmaus.
Saint Simeon Metaphrastes, who compiled the life of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke—drawing upon the accounts of ancient ecclesiastical writers such as Origen, Clement of Alexandria, and the church historian Eusebius of Caesarea—records that, following the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, Luke remained in Jerusalem for some time. Afterward, he departed for Antioch, where several other disciples were already present.
While stopping in the Samaritan city of Sebastia to preach the Gospel, he obtained the right hand of the Prophet John the Baptist and brought it to Antioch as a precious Christian relic. It was here that Luke met the Holy Apostle Paul during his second missionary journey, which took place around 50 AD. From there, both of them traveled to Greece to preach the Word of God.
Following the martyrdom of the Apostles Peter and Paul, Saint Luke left Rome and preached throughout Achaia, Libya, Egypt, and the Thebaid. The Holy Apostle Luke is the author of one of the four Gospels (the third Gospel in the New Testament canon), as well as the Acts of the Apostles. Furthermore, according to Church Tradition, he was the first iconographer, having painted icons of the Theotokos (the Mother of God). "May the grace of Him who was born of me, and my own grace, be with these icons," the Most Holy Theotokos said upon seeing them. In addition, Saint Luke painted icons of the Apostles Peter and Paul. As he was also a physician, the Apostle Luke is venerated as a holy healer. He reposed at the age of 84, after being subjected to torture by malicious pagans, who then hanged him from an olive tree in the city of Thebes in Boeotia.
