Calendar for October 3rd Saint Eustathius the Great Martyr
Placidus, a great Roman general. Once, while hunting, a cross appeared to him between the antlers of a stag, and he heard a voice calling him to be baptized. At his baptism, he received the name Eustathius, while his wife was named Theopiste and his sons Agapius and Theopistus. He then withdrew to Egypt, where a barbarian abducted his wife, and wild beasts carried off his children. Afterward, he lived for fifteen years as a hired laborer in the village of Vadisis. When barbarians attacked the Roman Empire, Emperor Trajan sent men to search for him. His comrades found him, and he defeated the barbarians. On the return journey to Rome, he was reunited with both his wife and sons. Trajan had already died and Hadrian had ascended the throne; Hadrian demanded that Eustathius offer sacrifices to idols. When Eustathius declared himself a Christian, the Emperor subjected him, along with his wife and children, to torture. They were put to death inside a red-hot bull.
Saint Michael, Prince, and Theodore, Boyar. Venerable Martyr Hilarion.
