Calendar for October 5 Saint Prophet Jonah
He lived over 800 years before Christ. The son of that widow in Zarephath of Sidon, whom the prophet Elijah resurrected from the dead. When he grew up, he pleased God so much that he was granted the gift of prophecy. He prophesied the sufferings of the Lord, the destruction of Jerusalem, and the end of the world. When the Lord commanded him to go to Nineveh and prophesy, he disobeyed but wanted to flee from the Face of God. The ship in which he was fleeing was struck by a great storm and the sailors threw Jonah into the sea. He was swallowed by a whale in whose belly he repented, and after three days he was thrown out onto dry land. By his three-day stay in the belly of a whale, the Holy Prophet Jonah prefigured the three-day stay of the Lord Jesus Christ in the tomb, and his salvation from the belly of a whale is a prefiguration of the Resurrection of the Lord.
