Calendar for October 9 Holy apostle and evangelist John the Theologian
Son of fisherman Zebedee and Salome, daughter of Joseph, betrothed to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He followed Jesus with his brother Jacob. He attended the Transfiguration with Peter and James. When the rest of the disciples left the crucified Lord, he stood under the cross with the Blessed Virgin, whom he watched over until her resurrection. Afterwards he preached the Gospel in Asia Minor, mostly in Ephesus. The Gentiles bound him and sent him to Emperor Dometian in Rome. When neither the poison he drank nor the boiling oil they threw him into harmed him, the emperor, considering him immortal, banished him to the island of Patmos, where he wrote his Gospel and Revelation. Then he returned to Ephesus. He was over 100 years old when he passed away. His body was not found in the grave.
