Calendar for September 11 Beheading of Saint John the Baptist
Herod Antipas, son of Herod who killed the children in Bethlehem, was married to the daughter of the Arab prince Aretas, whom he banished and took the wife of his living brother Philip. Saint John the Baptist spoke out against this lawlessness and Herod threw him into prison. At a feast, a drunken Herod promised Salome, the daughter of Herodias, who pleased him with her dance, to give her whatever she wanted, and she, at her mother's urging, asked for the head of John the Baptist. And John was beheaded and his head was brought to Herod on a platter. His body was buried by his disciples, and Herodias pierced his tongue with a needle and buried his head in a garbage dump. Then Prince Aretas and his army defeated Herod, who was exiled by Emperor Caligula to Gaul, then to Spain, where he and Herodias died in extreme poverty. And Salome perished on the river Sikoris (Sula).
