Calendar for September 11 Usekovanje of Saint John the Baptist
Herod Antipas, the son of Herod who killed the children in Bethlehem, was married to the daughter of the Arab prince Areta, whom he drove away and took the wife of his living brother Philip. Saint John the Baptist spoke out against this lawlessness and Herod threw him into prison. At a feast, a drunken Herod promises Salome, Herodias' daughter, who pleases him with a game, to give her whatever she wants, and she, at her mother's persuasion, asks for the head of John the Baptist. And John was beheaded and his head was brought to Herod on a plate. His body was buried by the disciples, and Herodias pierced his tongue with a needle and buried his head in a garbage dump. Then Prince Aretas and his army beat Herod, who was exiled by Emperor Caligula to Gaul, then to Spain, where he and Herodias died in extreme misery. And Salomia died on the river Sikoris (Suli).
