Calendar for September 13 Laying of the Belt of the Most Holy Theotokos
After the Assumption, the Most Holy Theotokos gave her belt to the Apostle Thomas. The belt was later transferred to Constantinople and kept in a sealed coffin in the Blachernae Church. This coffin was not opened until the time of Emperor Leo the Wise (886-912), when his wife, Empress Zoe, became mentally ill. After a vision, she wished to have the belt of the Most Holy Theotokos placed on her. The emperor asked the patriarch to open the coffin, and when the belt was placed on the empress, she immediately recovered. This holiday was established in memory of this miracle. A part of the belt is located in Georgia, in Zugdidi. The daughter of Emperor Roman was also healed by the Belt of the Most Holy Theotokos, and when she married Emperor Abukhaz of Georgia, she took a part of it with her.
