Calendar for September 13 Laying the girdle of the Blessed Virgin Mary
After the success, the Blessed Virgin gave her girdle to the Apostle Thomas. That belt was later transferred to Constantinople and kept in a sealed coffin in the church of Blacherni. This coffin was not opened until the time of Emperor Leo the Wise (886-912), when his wife, Empress Zoa, became mentally ill. After one apparition, she wished that the girdle of the Blessed Virgin Mary be put on her. The emperor begged the patriarch to open the casket, and as he put the belt on the empress, she immediately recovered. This holiday was established in memory of that miracle. One part of that belt is located in Georgia, in Zugdid. The daughter of Emperor Romanus was also healed by means of the girdle of the Holy Mother of God, so when she married Emperor Abukhaz of Georgia, she took a part of it with her.
