Calendar for September 13 The Laying of the Belt of the Most Holy Theotokos

After her Dormition, the Most Holy Theotokos gave her belt to the Apostle Thomas. This belt was later transferred to Constantinople and kept in a sealed casket in the Church of Blachernae. The casket remained unopened until the reign of Emperor Leo the Wise (886–912), when his wife, Empress Zoe, fell mentally ill. Following a vision, she desired to have the belt of the Most Holy Theotokos placed upon her. The Emperor entreated the Patriarch to open the casket; as soon as the belt was placed upon the Empress, she was immediately healed. This feast was established in commemoration of that miracle. A portion of the belt is located in Georgia, in the city of Zugdidi. The daughter of Emperor Romanos was also healed by the belt of the Most Holy Theotokos; upon marrying King Abkhaza of Georgia, she took a portion of it with her.

The Holy Martyrs of Jasenovac. Saint Gennadius, Patriarch of Constantinople. Hieromartyr Cyprian. Saint John, Metropolitan of Kiev.
