Calendar for September 16 Saint Hieromartyr Anthim
Born in Nicomedia. He was the bishop of Nicomedia during the persecution of Christians under the emperors Diocletian and Maximian. It was during the episcopate of Saint Anthim that 20,000 martyrs of Nicomedia suffered, on Christmas Day 302. Saint Anthim took refuge in the village of Omana, but one of his letters to Christians in prison was captured and handed over to Emperor Maximian. The emperor sent 20 soldiers to find him. The insightful elder took the soldiers into his home and entertained them, and only then did he tell them who he was. Amazed by the elder, the soldiers suggested that he hide, and they would tell the emperor that they had not found him. He refused. Along the way, the soldiers believed in Christ and Saint Anthim baptized them. After long torture, Saint Anthim was beheaded with an axe. He suffered at the beginning of the 4th century.
