He was the son of the *vojvoda* (chieftain) and priest Bogdan Zimonjić. He was born in Grahovo in 1866. He received monastic tonsure in 1895 and was elected Bishop of Zahumlje-Herzegovina in 1903. In 1920, he became the Metropolitan of Dabar-Bosnia. During the Second World War, he courageously defended the Orthodox faith and the Serbian script against the German Gestapo. A decisive role in this brazen attack was played by the Roman Catholic priest Božidar Bralo, the Ustaše commissioner for Bosnia and Herzegovina. Metropolitan Peter was arrested and imprisoned in May 1941. While in prison, he was stripped of all his episcopal insignia. After enduring severe torture, he was taken to Koprivnica and subsequently to Jasenovac (or Gospić). He was killed in Jasenovac and thrown into a red-hot brick kiln.
