Saint John the Theologian prophesied that a spring of miraculous water would open near Hierapolis, a prophecy that was soon fulfilled. A pagan in Laodicea had a mute daughter. The Archangel Michael appeared to him in a dream and told him to take her to the miraculous spring near Hierapolis. Upon drinking water from the miraculous spring, the girl began to speak. Both she and her father, along with their entire household, were then baptized, and they built a church there dedicated to the Archangel Michael. Later, a youth named Archippus came there to pursue the ascetic life. Pagans diverted a nearby river to flood the spring and the church, but—through the prayer of Archippus—a chasm opened in the earth into which the river sank and was swallowed up; the place was named Chonae ("The Plunging" or "Submersion"). Saint Archippus reposed there in peace at the age of seventy.
