He was a Roman officer in Caesarea Maritima. He was baptized by the Apostle Peter (Acts 10:1–48). He was the first among the Gentiles to enter the Church of God. Many believed that the Church was intended only for Jews and those who accepted Jewish circumcision. Cornelius left everything behind to follow the Apostle Peter, who later appointed him bishop of the pagan city of Skepsis, where he endured great suffering for the sake of Christ. Yet, through the power of God, he succeeded in destroying the temple of Apollo and baptizing the city's ruler, Demetrius, along with 277 pagans. He peacefully surrendered his soul to God in his old age. In time, his grave was forgotten, but he appeared to Silvanus, the Bishop of Troas, who—with the help of a wealthy man named Eugenius—built a church over the site. His relics are wonder-working.
