Calendar for September 3 - Holy Apostle Thaddeus
One of the Seventy. He received baptism from St. John the Baptist, and then he followed the Lord. After ascending to heaven, the Lord sent Thaddeus to Edessa, according to the promise to Prince Avgar when he sent him a napkin with His image not made by hands. When he kissed that napkin, Avgar was healed of leprosy, but not completely. St. Thaddeus taught Avgar the faith and baptized him. While, at the baptism, Abgar came out of the water, and the rest of the leprosy fell from him. Having glorified God, he summoned all the citizens of Edessa to hear a sermon about Christ from Saint Thaddeus. Hearing the apostle's sermon and seeing the miraculous healing of their prince, all the people of Edessa rejected idols, accepted the faith of Christ and were baptized. Saint Thaddeus rested in Virit of Phoenicia.
