Calendar for September 4 Holy Martyr Agathonius
He lived in Nicomedia. With great zeal, he turned the Greeks away from idolatry and taught them the faith of Christ. When the persecution of Christians began under Emperor Maximian, the imperial governor captured Saint Zotikus in the town of Carpinus, crucified his disciples on crosses, and brought him to Nicomedia. In Nicomedia, in addition to Saint Agathonius, he also captured and bound Saints Principes, Theoprepius, Akindinus, Severian, Zeno, and many others. Then they took them all to Byzantium. But, from wounds and exhaustion, Saint Zotikus, Theoprepius, and Akindinus died on the way. At Chalcedon they killed Saint Severian, and Saint Agathonicus, with the others, was brought to Silymbria in Thrace where, after torture, they were beheaded with the sword in front of the emperor himself.
Holy Martyr Eulalia. Holy Martyr Anthusa. Holy Hieromartyr Gorazd of Bohemia.
