F. VOJISLAV MIJATOVIC: MOTHER OF GOD SHOWED WHAT THE LORD WANTED WITH HER RESURRECTION
The Holy Liturgy in the Church of St. Nicholas, yesterday (28.08) on the feast of the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos, at which numerous believers received communion, was served by Archpriest-stavrophor Milenko Jekić and Priest Vojislav Mijatović.
During the Assumption Lent, a Moleban to the Most Holy Theotokos was served every evening in memory of an event from the 17th century, when, according to oral tradition, the Most Holy Theotokos protected Primorje from the plague.
Sermon by Priest Vojislav Mijatović at the Holy Liturgy on the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos in the Church of St. Nicholas in the Old Town:
“Here, today, brothers and sisters, we celebrate the second Easter according to the words of St. Justin of Celius. On the first Easter, Christ was resurrected. And today is the second Easter, the resurrection of the Most Holy Mother of God, Who was taken up with her body to Heaven.
Today She rested, as people rest. But when all the Apostles saw Her off and buried Her, the Holy Apostle Thomas was not present at the funeral of the Most Holy Mother of God, by the providence of God. When he came three days later, he expressed his desire to kiss the tomb and the holy relics of the Mother of God. When they went to the tomb and opened it, they saw that the body of the Most Holy Mother of God was not there. The Lord took Her body up to Heaven. This was evident on the same day, because the Most Holy Mother of God appeared to all the Apostles in the evening and announced that She went to Her Son, above all the Heavens.
Thus, the First after the Lord Christ, the Mother of God and the Theotokos, experienced the greatest joy of being ascended with the body and resurrected with the body, just as Her Son was resurrected. In this way, She showed what the Lord wanted with His Resurrection. That is, that He rose from the dead on this earth, resurrected His body, to show that we will be resurrected on the day of the Last Judgment.
What the Lord Christ experienced in this world and did, He did all for our sake, so that we too might do after Him.
Today you heard the Holy Gospel of the Most Holy Theotokos. When the Lord came to the house of His friends, Lazarus and his sisters (Luke 10:38-42), the Lord, as always, taught those present Divine truths. Then the younger sister Mary sat at the feet of Jesus and listened to His words. And Martha, the housewife, the older sister, tried to better welcome the Savior, to better prepare something for lunch. And Martha hurriedly said: “Lord, tell my sister to help me. Behold, I am busy with much work.” And He said to her: Martha, Martha, you are worried about many things, but only one thing is needed. Only one thing is needed” (Luke 10:38-42). That is – what?
To have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and to obey His commandments and listen to His teachings. “Mary has chosen the good part,” said the Savior (Luke 10:42), that which is the only thing that is needed by a human being in all the worlds. To believe in the One True God and to live according to His commandments.
May the Most Holy Mother of God lead and guide us throughout our lives, and bring us out of this world and into the next world, into the Kingdom, into the Eternal Kingdom of Her Son, so that we, the unworthy, may glorify Her Wondrous Son, our Lord and God and Savior Christ, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.”
