Russian Church: Banning UPC in Ukraine leads to violence against millions of believers
The implementation of the Ukrainian law that allows the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church to be banned will cause violence against millions of believers, said the President of the Moscow Patriarchate's synodal department for church relations with society and the media, Vladimir Legojda.
"The crackdown is underway with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church for refusing to side with the schismatic organization, which is a political project whose goal is to destroy the spiritual heritage of the Russian and Ukrainian people," he said.
He also added that this law creates the basis for the total liquidation of the income of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
Yesterday, the Parliament of Ukraine adopted a draft law that allows the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church to be banned in the country, Rada deputy Yaroslav Zeleznyak announced.
The law will enter into force 30 days after its publication. It was supported by 265 deputies, and 226 votes were needed for adoption.
The official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, previously called the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches, which supported the bill banning the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church - Satanists.
"It is a false quasi-church that uses similar rites, which, taking away churches and shrines, pretends to use them according to Orthodox customs. And in fact it makes fun of it. That's why we should talk about the destruction of Orthodoxy in Ukraine," Zakharova told "Zveda" television.
The Ukrainian authorities organized the biggest wave of persecution of the UPC in the modern history of the country. Citing its connection with Russia, local authorities in different regions of Ukraine decided to ban the operation of the UPC, and the parliament passed a bill in the first reading on its complete ban throughout the country.
The Russian Orthodox Church announced that Ukrainian separatists, with the help of local authorities, forcibly occupied hundreds of Orthodox churches, while "priests and believers, men and women, were subjected to physical violence."
