Saint Ignatius
"Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven" (Mt. 18, 4). That child, whom the Lord took and placed among his disciples, was Ignatius. Later, Ignatius was a disciple of St. John the Theologian, and then a bishop in Antioch. He introduced the antiphonal way of chanting in the church, as revealed to him by the angels. When the Christian emperor Trajan was passing through Antioch, he heard about Ignatius, called him and began to persuade him to sacrifice to idols, so he would give him the title of senator. When he refused, they chained him and sent him to Rome to be thrown to the beasts. In Rome, he was thrown in the circus in front of the lions, who tore him apart, leaving only a few larger bones and his heart. Saint Ignatius died in 106.
