"WITNESSES OF A CENTURY" – RELIGIOUS TOURISM IN KOTOR AND THE BAY OF KOTOR

As part of the commemoration of 100 years of organized tourism in Kotor, the Tourist Organization of the Municipality of Kotor is concluding its "Witnesses of a Century" discussion series—a program dedicated to the people, places, and themes that have shaped the tourism narrative of the city and the Bay of Kotor over time.

The seventh and final discussion will take place on November 3rd at 7:00 PM in the Church of the Holy Spirit in the Old Town, focusing on the theme of religious tourism in Kotor and the Bay of Kotor.

Speakers on this topic will include Archpriest-Stavrophore Nemanja Krivokapić, the Episcopal Vicar for Kotor and Tivat and parish priest of Kotor, and Don Robert Tonsati, the parish priest of Kotor and head of the Office for Culture and Cultural Heritage of the Diocese of Kotor.

As with previous events in this series, the discussion will be moderated by journalist Dušan Davidović.

For centuries, Kotor and the Bay of Kotor have served as a meeting point for diverse traditions, cultures, and faiths. Their churches, monasteries, convents, shrines, pilgrimage sites, and religious celebrations represent not only centers of spiritual life but also a vital part of the cultural and historical heritage that has drawn travelers and visitors for ages. The discussion will explore the relationship between spirituality, pilgrimage, and travel, as well as the significance of sacred heritage for the identity of Kotor and the Bay of Kotor (Boka). It will also address how religious tourism can be developed and presented today, while ensuring full respect for the sanctity of these spaces, local traditions, and the life of the local community.

This will be an opportunity to reflect on the fact that a city’s tourism narrative is defined by more than just hotels, roads, and the arrival of visitors. It is also shaped by places of prayer and silence, customs passed down through generations, and the heritage that Kotor preserves as a city of encounters.
