Cathedral of Saint Nicholas

Church of St. Nikole is located in the northern part of the Old Town of Kotor and its beauty attracts the attention of not only believers and those interested in the history of Orthodoxy, but also ordinary tourists.

The construction of the church began in 1902 on the foundations of a church that was built in the 17th century but was destroyed in the 19th century. It was built until 1909 - the date of completion is printed on the front of the building.

The interior of the church, the iconostasis is the work of Czech masters, which was completed in 1908. Liturgy is served every day in this church, and it is the only Orthodox church in Kotor where rites are performed every day, as well as baptisms and weddings. On the church itself is a large flag of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

HISTORY

 

The construction of the church began in 1902 on the foundations of a church that was built in the 17th century but was destroyed in the 19th century. It was built until 1909 - the date of completion is printed on the front of the building.

The project was carried out by the famous architect Ćiril Iveković, who came from Sarajevo to Dalmatia at the end of the 19th century and stayed in this region for 24 years, because those were the years of his fruitful work on the construction and renovation of a number of churches, parish houses and other public buildings in places on the Adriatic. and its hinterland.

 

ARCHITECTURE

 

Built in the Byzantine style, with only one nave and two bell towers on the main facade, the church is visible behind the large city wall, which is located directly next to it. The interior of the church fills the space, which impresses with its richness and the beauty of the iconostasis completed in 1908.

The Church of Saint Nicholas is known for its large collection of icons, the most famous of which is the Icon of the Holy Mother of God. Many religious documents and books, works of art, clothing, etc. are stored in the church.

In this temple, a fragment of the relics of St. Nicholas of Myrliki, the Miracle Worker, is kept.

The Treasury, Library and Archives of the Serbian Orthodox Church with extremely rich funds are located near the Church of St. Nicholas. A part of everything is exhibited in the exhibition space of the Treasury.
