Calendar for April 22 - Holy Martyr Eupsychia
He was of noble origin and brought up well in a pious faith. During the time of Emperor Julian the Apostate, when he managed the Church of God in Caesarea. Basil the Great, this Eupsichius, married a respectable girl. But he was not given a single day to live in marriage. Because at the time of his wedding, a pagan holiday took place with a sacrifice to the idol Fortune. Eupsichies and his companions went and smashed all the idols in the temple, and destroyed the temple itself. When the Emperor Julian heard about this, he became very angry and ordered that the culprits be cut down, that many Christians be taken into the army, that a huge tribute be imposed on the Christians, that the temple of Fortune be rebuilt at the expense of the Christians, and that the city be deprived of its honor the name of Caesarius (given to him by Caesar Claudius) and called by his previous name of Maza. St. Evpishius was first tied to a tree and tortured angrily, and then cut down, 362 years. Shortly after that, the wicked emperor Julian visited that city on his way to Persia, against which he was at war. St. Vasilije went out to meet him and brought out three barley loaves as a sign of honor and hospitality. The emperor ordered that the saint be given a handful of hay as a reward. Vasilije said to the emperor: "you are mocking us, oh emperor, we brought you bread, which we feed on, and you give us Scottish food, which you cannot turn into human food with your power." — To that the emperor replied: "Know that I will feed you with that hay when I return from Persia!" — But the wicked apostate never returned alive from Persia, because he died there a well-deserved and unnatural death.
