Calendar for August 17 The Seven Holy Martyrs of Ephesus
When Emperor Decius organized an idolatrous sacrifice in Ephesus, 7 young men: Maximilian, Iamblichus, Martinian, John, Dionysius, Exacustodian and Antoninus, took refuge in a cave on the nearby hill of Ochlon, which the emperor had walled up. But God sent a long sleep upon the young men. After more than 200 years, during the time of Emperor Theodosius the Younger, a great dispute arose over the resurrection of the dead. The emperor prayed to God to somehow reveal the truth to people. Then the shepherds of a certain Adolius began to build sheepfolds on Ochlon and took stone by stone from the walled-up opening of that cave. The young men woke up, just as they had fallen asleep. Emperor Theodosius himself came to talk to them. But after a week God took them to Himself, to await the day of the general resurrection.
