Calendar for August 18 - Holy Martyr Eusignius
He was a soldier under Emperor Maximian, Emperor Constantine the Great and his sons. He attended the torture of Saint Basilisk and saw the Lord receive his soul from an angel. He also saw the cross that appeared to Saint Constantine. After 60 years of military service, he retired to his birthplace in Antioch where he spent his life in fasting and prayer. In the time of Julian the Apostate, two quarreling men took him as a judge. He rules in favor of the right one, and the others accuse him of being a Christian. The Emperor Eusignius called him to court, but he severely reprimanded him for his apostasy and rebuked him with the wonderful example of Constantine the Great. The emperor ordered to cut off his head. Saint Eusignius died in 362, at a very old age.
