Calendar for December 23 Holy Martyrs Minas and Others
Minas and Hermogenes were born in Athens. They lived in Constantinople and were in great honor with both the emperor and the people. On one occasion, Emperor Maximian sent Minas to exterminate the Christians in Alexandria. Minas there declared himself a Christian. Then the emperor sent Hermogenes to punish Minas and suppress Christianity in this city. Hermogenes cut off Minas' feet and tongue, gouged out his eyes, and threw him into prison, where the Lord healed him. Seeing this, Hermogenes was baptized, began to preach Christ, and became bishop of Alexandria. Then Emperor Maximian went to Alexandria and put Minas and Hermogenes to torture. Seeing their courage, they cried out before the emperor that Eugraphus was a Christian and a friend of Saint Minas, the emperor drew his sword and beheaded him. And the executioners cut down Mina and Hermogenes.
