Calendar for June 5 Venerable Michael the Confessor
Saint Michael, Bishop of Synad. This holy and wise hierarch dedicated himself to the service of Christ from childhood. He practiced asceticism together with Saint Theophylact of Nicomedia. Once in a dry season, these two saints brought abundant rain to the earth with their prayers. Because of his ascetic and virginal life from his early youth, he was chosen and consecrated by Patriarch Tarasius as Bishop of Synad. He participated in the VII Ecumenical Council. At the request of the emperor, he went to Caliph Harun al-Rashid to negotiate peace. During the reign of the evil Leo the Armenian, he was deposed from the episcopal throne for venerating icons and sent into exile, where he died in misery and poverty, remaining faithful to Orthodoxy to the end, and in 818 he moved to the kingdom of Christ the King.
Venerable Martyr Michael. Venerable Euphrosyne of Polotsk.
