Calendar for May 10 Burning of the relics of Saint Sava in Vračar
The body of Saint Sava was buried in the Mileševo Monastery. Seeking comfort and healing during the time of Turkish tyranny, Serbian people from all over gathered at the relics of their saint. Fearing that a rebellion against the Turks might break out at that place, Sinan Pasha of Belgrade ordered the relics of Saint Sava to be transferred to Belgrade and burned there. The Turkish army that went to retrieve the body of Saint Sava was led by Ahmet Bey Oćuz. The army invaded Mileševo on Good Friday, ransacked the monastery, took the ark with the holy relics and took them to Sinan Pasha. The next day, on Holy Saturday, the relics of Saint Sava of Serbia were burned at Vračar. This was in 1594. This gruesome event was accompanied by weeping and wailing throughout the Serbian land.
