Calendar for May 28 Venerable Pachomius the Great
A native of Egypt. As a soldier, he participated in the battle of Emperor Constantine against Maxentius. Having learned about Christ, he was baptized and went to the Theban Desert to practice asceticism. At the place of Tavenisiot, an angel appeared to him and gave him a tablet on which was written the constitution of a communal monastery, ordering him to establish such a monastery in that place. And Pachomius began to build many cells, although he was alone with his brother John. But soon many monks settled there. Pachomius founded six more monasteries. The number of his disciples grew to 7,000, many of whom were later canonized. Countless miracles were performed through Saint Pachomius. He peacefully reposed in 348. He is considered the founder of the monastic community.
Saint Achilles, Bishop of Laris. Venerable Silouan.
