Calendar for October 24th Saint Philip the Apostle
A native of Caesarea in Palestine, he was married and had four daughters—all of whom were consecrated virgins for the sake of Christ and endowed by God with the gift of prophecy. When the Apostles chose deacons, Philip was among them; he served the poor and the widows with great zeal. During the persecution of Christians in Jerusalem, he took refuge in Samaria, where he preached the Gospel and performed many miracles, such as casting out demons and healing the sick. Upon witnessing the miracles of the Holy Apostle Philip, the notorious Simon the Sorcerer was baptized. Saint Philip also baptized the eunuch of Queen Candace. Subsequently, an angel of God transported him in an instant to Azotus, where he continued to preach the Gospel and baptized many. Later, he was appointed Bishop of Tralles. He surrendered his soul to the Lord in peace, at a very advanced age.
Venerable Theophanes the Confessor (the "Inscribed"). Saint Nectarius, Patriarch of Constantinople. Holy Martyrs Zinaida and Philonida.
