Calendar for October 25th Holy Martyrs Tarachus, Probus, and Andronicus
Tarachus was a native of Claudiopolis in Syria, Probus of Side in Pamphylia, and Andronicus was the son of a prominent citizen of Ephesus. During the reign of Emperor Diocletian, all three were tortured by the proconsul Numerius Maximus. First, they were beaten with rods, and then they were thrown to wild beasts in the amphitheater. However, the beasts behaved gently around them. Seeing this, many came to believe in Christ and began to cry out against the proconsul. Enraged—even more savage than the beasts themselves—he ordered them to be beheaded. Furthermore, their bodies were hacked into pieces and mixed with the remains of condemned criminals that the beasts had previously torn apart. During the night, the Christians Macarius, Felix, and Verus came to retrieve the martyrs' bodies for burial, but they could not distinguish which ones belonged to them. They prayed to God, and three candles appeared above the bodies of the saints.
Saint Martin, Bishop of Tours. Venerable Cosmas of Maiuma.
