Calendar for October 26 Holy Martyr Carpus
He was the Bishop of Thyatira, a native of Pergamum. He suffered for Christ, along with the deacon Papylus, during the reign of Emperor Decius and the governorship of Valerius. Valerius had them taken to Sardis, where he subjected them to torture, but an angel of God healed them. Afterward, they were dragged to Pergamum. Carpus was tied to a tree and scourged until his body was covered in wounds. At that moment, he began to laugh. When asked why he was laughing, he replied that he saw the heavens opened and the Lord upon His throne, surrounded by Cherubim and Seraphim. While being tortured, Papylus healed a man who was blind in one eye; upon witnessing this, many came to believe in Christ. They were thrown to wild beasts and then cast into a fiery furnace—into which Papylus’s sister, Agathonica, also leaped. Finally, in the year 251, they were beheaded with a sword.
Commemoration of the 365 Holy Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council. The Holy Great Martyrs Zlata of Meglen and Bosiljka of Pasjane; the Hieromartyr Benjamin, a deacon.
