Calendar for September 12 Transfer of the relics of Saint Alexander Nevsky
Turned to God from an early age. He became the Prince of Novgorod in 1236. Although weaker in army, with God's help, he defeated the Swedes on the Neva River in 1240. In 1250, he became the Grand Prince of Vladimir. In the Tatar Golden Horde, he did not want to bow to idols. Because of his wisdom, courage, physical strength and beauty, he was respected even by the Tatar Khan. Feeling that his end was approaching, he tonsured a monk with the name Alexy, received communion and - breathed his last. It was in 1263, when he was 43 years old. At the funeral, as if alive, he opened his hand and took the farewell letter from the metropolitan. By order of Tsar Peter the Great, in 1724, his relics were transferred from Vladimir to Petrograd, to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, where they remain today.
