Calendar for September 29 Venerable Dorotheus
A native of Thebes. He lived in the desert near Alexandria, in the place of the Hermit's Cell. Venerable Palladius, Bishop of Elenopol, a disciple of Saint Dorotheus and an eyewitness to his exploits, writes in his "Lavsaic" that the elder Dorotheus spent 60 years in a cave, leading a very strict life. All day long, even in the midday heat, he collected stones in the coastal desert and constantly built cells, giving them to those who could not build them themselves. He ate a little dry bread and a handful of greens, and drank a little water. Venerable Palladius says that he never saw him stretch out his legs or lie down, but that he would weave baskets from palm fronds all night long, earning his bread in this way. He reposed at the end of the 4th century.
