Calendar for August 29 - Saint Raphael of Banat
Born Serbian. He practiced asceticism in the Hilandaru monastery. This monastery at that time had several metohs in Serbian lands, among them one in the area of today's Zrenjanin. In that metoch, according to some monastic obedience, the brotherhood of Hilandar sent Hieromonk Raphael. There, Saint Raphael continued to live a strict ascetic life, not only in performing the monastic obedience he was instructed to do, but also in all the God-pleasing feats of the monastic life, especially in the feat of prayer and fasting. He lived in a small hut made of ordinary reeds, where he calmly presented himself to the Lord. His relics proved to be miraculous, which is why many people come to his grave. Saint Raphael of Banat lived in the 16th and 17th centuries.
