He was chosen as a bishop in Kyrenia, Cyprus, because of his wisdom and benevolence. When the persecution of Christians began during the reign of Emperor Licinius, they brought him to court. The torturer Savin advised him to renounce Christ and worship idols. When he refused, they tortured him. They hit his body with kids, and he prayed to God with gratitude. Thinking that his end was near, grateful to God for making him worthy of the crown of martyrdom, he taught the Christians who were around him. But, by the providence of God, Emperor Constantine proclaimed freedom to Christians and ordered the release of all prisoners for the sake of Christ. Tortured in that way, Saint Theodotus returned to his throne and lived for another two years. He ended his earthly life in 302.
