His last days, Bishop Nicholas spent in the Russian Monastery of Saint Tikhon in South Canaan, Pennsylvania. He rested peacefully in the Lord, early on Sunday, on the day of the alms, March 18, 1956. Death found him at prayer. From the Russian monastery, he was transferred to the Serbian Monastery of Saint Sava in Libertyville and buried with great honors in the Serbian National Cemetery next to the monastery. Upon hearing the news of the Bishop's death, the bells from the towers of all Serbian churches around the world rang out. Especially in his "Domaj". Sorrow filled the Serbian monasteries, monks and nuns, clergy and people, especially his faithful worshipers. Sorrow, but at the same time joy. Everyone knew and felt with their souls that Serbia had gained another prayer book before the throne of the Lord. The people immediately began to pray to him as a saint.

The transfer of his holy relics to Serbia can only be compared to the transfer of the relics of Saint Sava from Trnovo to Mileševo. Modern Serbian generations have experienced the special grace of God to be visited at the same time by two of the greatest Serbs – Saint Sava, with the construction of the temple in Vračar, and Bishop Nicholas upon his return from America.
